Healthy Eating

I Used to Be a Vitamix Skeptic—Now I Can’t Imagine Life Without One

Even though my whole life basically revolves around food, I tend to keep my kitchen and eating habits relatively frugal. I make grocery lists before I go to the supermarket to avoid impulse purchases. I meal prep often to avoid eating out and ordering delivery. And I’m often willing to overlook quality to save a few bucks (sure, I wish my Dutch oven was a Le Creuset, but my bootleg version works just fine).

So when I first heard about the Vitamix many moons ago, I just did not get the appeal. Why would someone need to spend upwards of $400 when they could get a perfectly fine blender that does basically the same thing at a fraction of the cost? Sure, a Vitamix can also do things that a food processor can do, like make pesto or ice cream. But even then it’s still cheaper to buy a run-of-the-mill food processor and a blender than it is to buy just one Vitamix.

But then I moved in with a friend who owns a Vitamix, had the opportunity to try it out, and suddenly realized what all the hype is about. It has a high-power motor and large blades that allow it to blend any ingredient quickly and evenly. So I always end up with the smoothest smoothies, silkiest soups, and perfectly chunky pestos. I’m in blending heaven.

I use it at least once a day and sometimes even more than that—which is way more often than I ever used the bargain store blender and food processor I had before my roommate moved in. If she ever moves out (fingers crossed she won’t) I’ll definitely have to buy my own. (For the record, this post was not sponsored by Vitamix. I just really love it that much.)

If that’s not enough to convince you, you can get 10 percent cash back on your Vitamix purchase when you sign up for SELFstarter—a new members-only food, fitness, and shopping site from the editors of SELF.
